This will be a short posting intended to start a train of thought. We note that Lowes Hardware in the US is pulling support for a TV show showing Muslim family life. I've never seen this show so cannot comment on its content. However, along with related hysteria and new laws proposed by Congress aimed at controlling or limiting the rights of groups considered to be terrorists who these days are largely thought to be Muslims I am wondering if we are not reliving the witch hunts of centuries gone by. Every age needs, it seems, a bogey man and Muslims have inherited the mantle.
Lets think about it. Muslim witch burning? Now there's a project to divert public attention from what really matters..
Ok, I'll jump on the bandwagon, or is it a train.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have not seen this programme, nevertheless, it does seem that Lowes Hardware 'jumped the gun'. My information indicates that some Lowes executives were surprised that their ad. had been paired with the programme and acted quickly when they should have counted to ten first.
There seems little evidence that viewers avoided watching the programme but, on the other hand, many prospective customers have said that they will avoid Lowes.
There was the case earlier of the Pastor burning a Koran ... just a crazy kook. He certainly didn't increase his flock.
The delayed reaction is unfortunate. Governments ought to have strengthened the laws earlier, for example, banning the niqab in all public places, and educating non-English speaking Muslims that this country is NOT governed by Sharia laws, and we will only accept a 21st century version of the Koran.
Perhaps, to be more controversial, it should be stated that, just as Latin has been removed from our churches, Arabic should be removed from the mosques. And any Imam who doesn't correctly educate the congregation should be prosecuted.
If that's a 'witch hunt', so be it.
